High blood
pressure, also known as hypertension, can cause cardiovascular diseases. The
impact of increased blood pressure can be felt across the vital organs of the
body as well as our abilities. Read on to know the ways high blood pressure can
cause reversible and irreversible damage to your wellness.
1. Arteries: The peripheral
arterial disease caused by high blood pressure can affect the legs.
Hypertension can damage or narrow the arteries. The fats that we consume
through our diet can damage the inner lining of the arteries, reducing the
elasticity of these blood vessels. According to American
Heart Association, too much buildup of bad cholesterol (LDL) around the
arteries hardens into plaque when combined with other substances in the blood,
which can result in a stroke or a heart attack.
2. Aneurism: Aneurism can
be formed over time when blood keeps on flowing through the damaged arteries.
If the aneurysm ruptures, it may cause severe internal bleeding.
3. Eyes: Hypertension
can also cause eye problems and can damage the blood vessels in the region
where the image is focused (retina). Leaking blood vessels fluid to build up
under retina may lead to vision impairment unless high blood pressure is
treated. Retinopathy is another condition that results in bleeding in the eye.
The optical nerve damage may also occur —ultimately, causing blindness.
4. Brain: In order to
survive, the human brain requires a proper blood supply. If the brain does not
get adequate amount of oxygen, a stroke may occur. Stroke is still the third
leading cause of death in America. Dementia, cognitive impairment, and ischemic
attack may also occur because of hypertension.
5. Heart: High blood
pressure can cause severe damage to the heart. Increased blood pressure may
cause the left ventricle of the heart to enlarge. Arterial blood supply may
also get affected leading to a heart attack or failure. The adverse effects of
high blood pressure on the heart are often augmented by high cholesterol and
diabetes. The food that you eat has the greatest impact on the cholesterol
level. The amount of fat in the diet determines the levels of good and bad
cholesterol in the blood stream. Harvard
Health Publications reports that foods containing trans fats increases the
level of bad cholesterol in the body, contributing to heart diseases.
6. Preeclampsia and Eclampsia: These are the
conditions that a pregnant woman may face due to shooting blood pressures.
Gestational hypertension causes preeclampsia. Eclampsia is a worsened for of
preeclampsia and the woman may also suffer from seizures. Both of these
conditions are harmful to the mother and the unborn child. It may be
deleterious to the liver, kidneys and brain of the mother while the child’s
oxygen and blood supply may get affected.
7. Sexual Dysfunction: High blood
pressure results in erectile dysfunction. In women, hypertension may lead to
dryness at the vaginal region and loss of sexual desires.
8. Sleep Disorders: Research is
bridging the relationship between sleep apnea and hypertension. If the person’s
sleep is disturbed by obstructive sleep apnea, the blood pressure may escalate.
9. Kidneys: Renal failure
may occur because of the arterial and blood vessel damage. Kidneys fail to
perform their function properly in the absence of proper blood supply. The renal
organs will not be able to filter out toxins from the blood effectively. The
excessive fluid within the blood vessels will further raise the blood pressure.
10. Bone
Loss: Hypertension
also raises calcium levels in the urine, which leads to osteoporosis. Elderly
women are at a greater risk for bone loss due to hypertension.
